James Lemen Sr. was a preacher who fought in the Revolutionary War and was an early proponent of the abolition of slavery. He was a protege of Thomas Jefferson, and it is believed that he had an agreement with Jefferson[1] to move to Illinois and promote abolitionism in the new state. Lemen's leadership had an impact on both Indiana[2] and Illinois in becoming "free soil" states.
