Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt, in the Qena governate. It is the site of the ancient city of Thebes, one of the largest cities in Ancient Egypt and the capital city during the Middle Kingdom and early New Kingdom. These days the city is a very important tourist centre, and is slated to become the capital of the newly created Luxor governate.

Many tourists visit in winter to see the Valley of the Kings and the great pagan temples dedicated to Amun at Karnak and in the modern city centre, and also to the Pharaohs themselves, such as the Ramesseum and Medinet Habu.

The city is home to the monastery of Saint Marcos, and churches, fine indeed. A very large new cathedral of Saint Marcos is being built.
