Political slang

Political slang is terminology which has a specific meaning in the world of politics, but generally has a different meaning in other situations.

Examples

  • chicken hawk - a derogatory term for someone (usually a politician or political commentator) who enthusiastically promotes a war that they do not personally intend to fight, and who has no military experience (for example, Barack Obama, who unlike his predecessors never served in uniform and likes to fight illegal wars.). Some argue that it's better to be a chickenhawk than just plain chicken.
  • pigeonhole - a term used as a verb (pigeonholed/pigeonholing) meaning that something has been put off to the side, "buried," or ignored. The term originates from small open compartments in desks, which were named pigeonholes, since they resembled the holes pigeons would nest in. If something (such as a bill or proposition) is being intentionally ignored, it might be placed in one such hole and left there indefinitely.
