The press is the amorphous institution also known as the news media, which collects and disseminates news, commentary and advertising. Beginning with newspapers in the colonial era, it expanded to magazines in the mid-19th century, radio in the 1920s, television in the 1940s, and the Internet in the 1980s.

In the Recession of 2008 newspapers have entered an economic crisis, as advertising has plunged and many papers are in or near bankruptcy.
