William F. Halsey, Jr.

Fleet Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey, Jr. (October 30, 1882 - August 16, 1959) was an officer in the United States Navy. Halsey commanded the U.S. Third Fleet in the Pacific during World War II.

Halsey's aide during the war was Harold Stassen, who had resigned as governor of Minnesota to enter the Navy. Halsey retired from the navy in 1947 after 44 years. He saw action during World War I, earning a Navy Cross for distinguished service. He held a number of commands in the navy, including:

  • USS Dale
  • USS Saratoga
  • NAS Pensacola
