xAI is a new artificial intelligence company organized by Elon Musk in Nevada in April 2023, and publicly launched by him in July 2023.

The team is headed up by Elon Musk and includes team members that have worked at other big names in AI, including OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind (which was recently folded into Google).[1]

As reported by CNN:

“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk tweeted in December, responding to a Twitter user who asked OpenAI’s CEO if it was possible to “turn off the woke settings” on ChatGPT.[2]

As of February 2024, Musk is not seeking investors in xAI and is continuing to fund and lead it himself, with its program Grok as made available on his platform Twitter (now called X).[3]
