The Apollo 9 spacecraft was the third successful manned flight of Project Apollo, the manned moon missions, and had an important proof of the concepts needed for the later Apollo 11, as it was the first flight of the Lunar Module (LM), the first test of the Apollo Space Suits and the second flight of the Saturn V rocket. Apollo 9 was crewed by James McDivitt, the Commander; David Scott, the Command Module Pilot and Russell Schweickart, Lunar Module Pilot. Apollo 9 launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 3, 1969, and returned March 13th.
