The White Army was an army raised in Western Russia to oppose Lenin's Red Guards other external groups also arose in to fight the Red Guards including the anarchist Black Army under Nestor Makhno. The White Army was composed of conscripts and volunteers. At first successful, they ultimately lost to the Red Army.

The colour White is a symbol of the Russian-Orthodox church.
