The 2014 Murder of the Three Israeli Teenagers (also known as the Kidnapping and Murder of Eyal, Gilad and Naftali) was a heinous act of racist Arab Palestinian terrorism carried out by members of the Islamist terror organization Hamas on the night of June 12, 2014 (15 Sivan 5774). Three Jewish teenagers – students of religious Zionist yeshivot – were abducted while hitchhiking home from their yeshiva in Gush Etzion and brutally murdered in cold blood within a very short time.[1]

The victims were:

Gilad Michael Shaar, 16, resident of Talmon, student at Yeshivat Makor Chaim in Kfar Etzion

Yaakov Naftali Fraenkel, 16, resident of Nof Ayalon, student at Yeshivat Makor Chaim, dual Israeli–American citizen

Eyal Yifrach, 19, resident of Elad, student at Yeshivat Shavei Hevron.

The abduction and murder were planned and executed by members of the Hamas terrorist organization, with the operation initiated and commanded by Mahmoud Kawasmeh (released in the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange), and directly carried out by Marwan Kawasmeh and Amer Abu Aisheh.[2]

On August 20, 2014 senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri publicly admitted that the abduction and murder were carried out by the military wing of Hamas – the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.[3][4]

Course of events

Planning and execution

The abduction was meticulously planned by Hamas operative Hussam Kawasmeh together with his relative Marwan Kawasmeh. Funding, weapons (two M16 rifles and two pistols), vehicles and hideout locations were arranged in advance.[5]

On the evening of Thursday, June 12, 2014, the three boys stood at the hitchhiking post near Alon Shvut junction in Gush Etzion. Around 22:15 a stolen Hyundai i35 with yellow license plates stopped. The boys entered the vehicle, believing it was a regular ride.

Minutes later Gilad Shaar managed to call the Israeli police emergency hotline (100) and whisper "They kidnapped me". Gunshots were heard shortly afterwards. The terrorists shot all three boys almost immediately after the abduction.[6]

The terrorists drove to an area south of Hebron, burned the car, transferred the bodies to black plastic bags, and buried them in a shallow grave near Halhul.

The 18-day national ordeal – Operation Brother's Keeper

For 18 agonizing days the Jewish nation and the entire world followed the fate of the three missing boys. Massive search operation "Return, Our Brothers" (שובו אחים) was launched involving thousands of IDF soldiers, Shin Bet, Border Police, civilian volunteers and advanced technological means.

During the operation Israel significantly damaged Hamas infrastructure in Judea & Samaria – arresting over 400 Hamas operatives (including dozens released in the Shalit deal), discovering dozens of terror tunnels, seizing large quantities of weapons and arresting senior Hamas figures.[7]

On June 30, 2014 the bodies were discovered by a civilian volunteer near Halhul. The nation mourned deeply.

On September 23, 2014 the two direct murderers were located and killed during a joint IDF–Yamam–Shin Bet operation.[8]

Legal and media aftermath

In subsequent years, the families of the victims pursued legal action aimed at holding Hamas and its financial backers accountable. In an unprecedented civil lawsuit filed in Israel, the families sought substantial damages from Hamas and argued that funds transferred by the Palestinian Authority to Hamas-enabled entities materially supported the terrorist organization responsible for the murders. The lawsuit was intended not only as a form of justice, but also as a deterrent against future acts of terrorism and against the financing of terrorist organizations through indirect state mechanisms.[9]

The murders and their context later became the subject of international media portrayals. Critics have argued that some dramatizations, most notably the HBO miniseries Our Boys, focused narrowly on subsequent crimes while omitting or minimizing the Hamas kidnapping and murder of the three Israeli teenagers that preceded them. According to such criticism, this selective framing created a false moral equivalence and failed to convey the central role of Palestinian terrorist violence and incitement in triggering the broader escalation of events in the summer of 2014.[10]

Legacy and national meaning

The terrible murder shocked the Jewish people worldwide and led to an extraordinary wave of Jewish unity, prayer and solidarity.

The three mothers – Rachel Fraenkel, Bat-Galim Shaar and Iris Yifrach – became symbols of faith, strength and dignity during the 18 days of uncertainty.

Following the tragedy the families established Unity Day (יום האחדות) in Israel and the Diaspora, culminating in the annual Jerusalem Unity Prize awarded to individuals and initiatives promoting Jewish unity.[11]

Many memorial sites, outposts, streets, springs, pre-military academies, songs and cultural projects were created in their memory throughout Israel.

The abduction and murder are widely regarded in Israel as one of the most painful and unifying national traumas of the 21st century, highlighting both the cruelty of Palestinian terrorism and the resilience of the Jewish people.
