AMBER Alert stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. A government hotline to recover and protect missing persons, predominantly children. The system originated in 1996. Alerts are sent by law enforcement to commercial radio stations, Internet radio, satellite radio, local television stations, cable TV by the Emergency Alert, cell phone text/SMS/email and electronic billboards.

The service was named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas.
