BTU is the abbreviation for British thermal unit(s), a unit of energy. It is used worldwide in the power, steam generation, heating and air conditioning industries. Scientists conducting research and teachers prefer the term of the joule (J), which is an SI unit of energy.

As a unit of power, BTU per hour (BTU/h) is understood, but often (as on barbecue grills) the "per hour" is omitted and simply BTU is used.
