Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. is an American financial services firm headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1945 as an investment bank and brokerage business, the firm became a major participant in fixed-income securities markets and government bond trading.[1] [2]
The company provides investment banking, capital markets, brokerage, fixed-income trading, research, and asset management services to institutional and corporate clients.[3]
History
Cantor Fitzgerald was founded in 1945 by Bernard Gerald Cantor and John Fitzgerald.[4] The firm initially focused on brokerage and investment banking services and later became a significant participant in the United States government securities market.[5]
In 1972, the company established one of the first electronic marketplaces for United States Treasury securities, helping to modernize bond trading.[6]
During the 1980s and 1990s, Cantor Fitzgerald expanded its role in fixed-income markets and developed a reputation as one of the leading dealers in U.S. government securities.[7]
In 1991, Howard Lutnick became President and Chief Executive Officer, and later Chairman of the firm.[8]
World Trade Center
Prior to September 11, 2001, Cantor Fitzgerald's corporate headquarters occupied floors 101 through 105 of One World Trade Center (the North Tower). The offices were located above the impact zone of American Airlines Flight 11.[9]
The attacks resulted in the deaths of 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees, representing the largest loss of life suffered by any single company during the terrorist attacks.[10]
Following the attacks, the firm rebuilt its operations and established relief and charitable programs for the families of employees who had been killed.[11]
The company's experience during the attacks has become one of the most documented corporate stories arising from September 11, 2001.
Fixed-Income Markets
Cantor Fitzgerald became particularly well known for its activities in:
- United States Treasury securities
- Government bond markets

Philanthropy
