Chicano is a term used to describe native-born Americans of Mexican ancestry, as opposed to Mexican nationals living in the United States. The usage of this self-identifiable ethnic term was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Not all Mexican Americans, Latinos or Hispanics prefer this term, while the term is connected with US-born Mexican communities of the Southwest US developed its own sub-culture apart from the country of Mexico since the mid 1800s.
