Essay:Hockey and racism
Was ice hockey racist? That is, did it discriminate against black players in favor of whites?
One argument for ice hockey being racist is the expense required to participate in the sport (ice skates, hockey sticks, helmets, etc. add up financially), whereas sports with large black participation rates (such as basketball) require only a ball (however, finances are required to participate in elite-level teams).
One argument against ice hockey being racist is that it is traditionally played in cold-weather countries where the population is majority Caucasian and there are few, if any, blacks residing there, whereas basketball is played in inner cities where blacks are the majority population. A large percentage of NHL players who are black or partly black grew up in the very racially diverse Toronto, Ontario area.
