Fit as a mallee bull is an Australian idiom meaning physically very fit, strong.
The mallee region in the north western part of the Australian state of Victoria is named after its vegetation, a low eucalypt that not only challenged the early settlers with the hardness of its wood above ground but for the infuriating ubiquity of its spreading roots below the surface.
To be successful in this scrub, even the cattle have to be tough.
