Gatlinburg is a city in east Tennessee.

The city was named for a prominent land-owning family; ironically, the family were highly supportive of the Confederacy in the Civil War notwithstanding that East Tennessee was generally abolitionist (the mountainous terrain was not suitable to plantation farming, and therefore slaveholding was not common in the area).

Located within and completely surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it (along with neighboring Sevierville and Pigeon Forge) is dependent on tourism as its major economic activity.
