May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose

May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose is a country song by "Little" Jimmy Dickens (called that as he stood only 4'10"). It would be #1 on the country charts for two weeks in November 1965, and would reach #15 on the pop charts, his only single to do so. It is by far his best-known work.

The unique guitar sounds featured in the song were made by Grady Martin, a member of the "Nashville A-Team" (a group of studio musicians featured on many notable country hits), using a new tape delay machine called the Echoplex.

The song's chorus is an insult, repeated to the singer after a series of cheap, insulting behaviors:

  • In the first verse, he gives a beggar a mere penny.
  • In the second verse, his laundryman finds a $100 bill in his clothes; the singer repays him a mere dime for the phone call.
  • In the third verse, a taxi driver speeds taking the singer to catch a train; as a police officer gives the driver a ticket, the singer simply stands by, waiting for his change from the fare.
