New Year's Eve is a celebrated observance, which in most countries takes place on December 31.
It is not a Federal holiday, but in some places is an observed holiday. However, for individual United States taxpayers it is the cutoff date for reporting income. Also, under tax law, a couple who marries on New Year's Eve can claim married status on their tax return for that year, and a child born on December 31 can be included as a dependent on the year's tax return.
It is also, for many businesses, the end of their fiscal year.
Normally it is observed with parties, attendees celebrating the countdown to the new year, followed by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
