Panyaring

Panyarring, Panyaring, manstealing, (or simply kidnapping) is the name of the process by which African tribal leaders would sell off other tribal members into slavery after a war victory.

First, a stronger tribe would overwhelm a weaker tribe and triumph in some war. After which the losing tribe often times was sold off into slavery. Back during the Transatlantic Slavery period this was a very typical way that slave traders procured their slave cargo.

William Wilberforce commented about Panyarring in his A Letter on the Abolition of the Slave Trade, pointing out that To panyar is to kidnap or steal men. It is a word used all over the Coast of Guinea.
