Tin(IV) oxide, also known as stannic oxide or tin dioxide, is a chemical compound. Its chemical formula is SnO2. The tin is in its +4 oxidation state.
Properties
Tin(IV) oxide is a white solid. It dissolves in acids easily. It is commonly found in the ground as cassiterite, where it is dark because it is not pure.
Preparation
Tin(IV) oxide can be made by burning tin in air. It can also be made by burning tin(II) oxide.
Uses
It is used in wires to detect gases that can burn. It is also used to make ceramics opaque.
