United States v. Booker

In United States v. Booker, 543 U.S. 220 (2005), the U.S. Supreme Court held that facts must be found be a jury and proved beyond a reasonable doubt to support a federal sentence longer than a prescribed period, and also held that the federal Sentencing Guidelines were advisory rather than mandatory.
