The first justice to take the oath of office was James Wilson who took the oath on October 5th, 1789.
The first African American member of the court was Thurgood Marshall who took the oath on August 2nd, 1967.
The first female member of the court was Sandra Day O'Connor who took the oath on September 25th, 1981.
The first Hispanic member of the court was Sonya Sotomayor who took the oath on August 8th, 2009.[1]
