The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals is the highest and only appellate court in West Virginia, which is one of 11 states having only one appellate court.

On August 9, 2018, a House committee voted to impeach the entire West Virginia Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia describes itself as busiest appellate court of its kind in the United States.[1]

It has five Supreme Court Justices, and they hear appeals of:

  • all matters decided in the circuit courts, including criminal convictions and appeals from administrative agencies.
  • workers’ compensation appeals from the administrative agency.
  • appeals of decisions decided in family court if they parties agree not to appeal to the circuit court.
