William Henry Irwin was a journalist associated with the muckraking[1] era of journalism at the beginning of the 20th century.

Irwin's most well known work was his series on The American Newspaper.[2]

Early life

Irwin was born on September 14, 1873, in Oneida, New York.[3] He graduated from Stanford in 1899.[4]

The American Newspaper

The American Newspaper was a series published by Irwin which conducted a study on "journalism in its relation to the public". Irwin began his series with an expose of "the power of the press" in which he proved that the press has "more influence" than any other institution with an explanation of why.[5]
