View source for Debate: Could Christian denominations exist without the Catholic Church?

Could Christian denominations exist without the Catholic Church? If it were not for Jesus's Church, would the other denominations ever exist?

The Eastern Orthodox Church is doing OK.  The Roman Catholic Church split off from the earlier church , so its existence wasn't really necessary.  There were bound to be break off sects in time.
