Seleucus II Callinicus (Greek: Σέλευκος Β΄ Καλλίνικος) was the fourth king of the Seleucid Empire, ruling from 246–225 BC. His reign began during one of the most violent succession crises in Hellenistic history. The agnomen Callinicus (“Nobly Victorious”) refers not to military conquest, but to his *victory in succession*—a political and theological claim that his accession was noble, rightful, and divinely sanctioned despite the rival claim of Berenice’s infant son.

Early Life
Seleucus II was the elder son of:
* Antiochus II Theos – third king of the Seleucid Empire
* Laodice I – his first wife, who later orchestrated the dynastic coup that placed Seleucus II on the throne.

He was born around 265 BC and raised within the royal court traditions of Syria and Asia Minor.

Accession and Dynastic Crisis (246 BC)
Seleucus II ascended the throne in 246 BC under catastrophic circumstances. His father Antiochus II had divorced Laodice and married Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, as part of the peace settlement ending the Second Syrian War.

Upon Antiochus II’s sudden death, Laodice acted immediately:
* She proclaimed Seleucus II king.
* She had Berenice and her infant son murdered.
* She purged supporters of the Ptolemaic marriage.

These events triggered the Third Syrian War (also called the Laodicean War), forming the historical background of Daniel 11:6.

The Meaning of “Callinicus”
Seleucus II’s agnomen Callinicus (“Nobly Victorious”) was not earned through military success. Instead, it was a dynastic and theological statement:

* He was the rightful heir over Berenice’s rival son.
* His accession was noble and legitimate, despite the succession crisis.
* All these events were prophetically foretold
* Apollo, through prophecy, had judged in his favor.

This interpretation is reinforced by his coinage. On the reverse of his tetradrachms, Apollo Delphios stands beside the Delphic tripod (the Oracle of Prophecy) with his right arm extended holding a fletched arrow—the Arrow of Fate. The tripod symbolizes prophecy; the arrow symbolizes the execution of divine judgment. Together they assert that Seleucus II’s succession was foreseen and sanctioned by Apollo.

The Third Syrian War
Berenice’s brother, Ptolemy III Euergetes, invaded the Seleucid Empire in retaliation. His campaign was devastating:
* He seized Antioch, Seleucia, and much of Syria.
* He advanced deep into Mesopotamia.
* He captured royal treasures and religious artifacts.

Seleucus II struggled to repel the invasion and lost significant territory. The war ended with a weakened Seleucid state and a strengthened Ptolemaic kingdom.

Civil War with Antiochus Hierax
Seleucus II’s younger brother, Antiochus Hierax, rebelled in Asia Minor. Supported by local rulers and Galatian mercenaries, Hierax defeated Seleucus II at the Battle of Ancyra. This civil war fractured the empire further:
* Asia Minor was lost.
* Local dynasts gained independence.
* Seleucid authority shrank to Syria and the eastern satrapies.

Coinage and Propaganda
Seleucus II’s coinage is central to understanding his reign. His tetradrachms from Seleukeia-on-the-Tigris depict:

* Obverse: Diademed head of Seleucus II Callinicus.
* Reverse: Apollo Delphios standing beside the Delphic tripod, right arm extended holding a fletched arrow.

This imagery communicates:
* **Prophecy** (tripod)
* **Fate** (arrow)
* **Divine sanction of succession**
* **Legitimacy over Berenice’s heir**

Thus the agnomen Callinicus is a claim of *noble succession*, not military victory.

Later Reign and Death
Seleucus II eventually regained parts of northern Syria but never restored the empire to its former strength. He died around 225 BC after falling from his horse. His sons, Seleucus III Ceraunus and Antiochus III the Great, succeeded him.

In Prophecy
Seleucus II appears in the prophetic sequence of Daniel 11:
* Laodice’s coup corresponds to the breakup of alliances in Daniel 11:6.
* Ptolemy III’s invasion matches the “branch of her roots” who comes with an army in Daniel 11:7–9.
* His weakened reign sets the stage for the rise of Antiochus III the Great in Daniel 11:10–19.
