Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius is a manual of Catholic spiritual practice written by Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), the founder of the Society of Jesus. First published in Latin in 1548, the work provides a structured series of meditations, prayers, examinations of conscience, and contemplative exercises intended to help the practitioner examine his life, overcome disordered attachments, and discern the will of God.

Background and purpose
Ignatius developed the exercises out of his own religious experiences and subsequent spiritual formation. The work became an influential part of Catholic spirituality and an important foundation of Jesuit spiritual direction. Its methods are intended to lead the practitioner toward a deeper understanding of Christian teachings and a more deliberate commitment to following Jesus Christ.

This method is commonly described as *Ignatian contemplation* or imaginative contemplation. It is intended not merely to produce vivid mental images, but to foster reflection, emotional engagement with Christian teachings, and a deeper commitment to imitating Christ. Scholarly research has identified imagination as a central feature of Ignatian spirituality.

Visualisation and hypnotism
The use of deliberate mental imagery in the Spiritual Exercises provides a basis for comparison with some techniques used in hypnotism. Both imaginative contemplation and some hypnotic procedures may involve sustained attention, mental imagery, and the construction of vivid imagined experiences.

In Ignatian contemplation, visualisation is employed within a Catholic religious framework. The practitioner imagines biblical scenes in order to reflect on their spiritual meaning, examine his own conduct, and strengthen his commitment to Christian faith. The stated purpose is religious and moral transformation rather than the induction of a hypnotic state.

Research in psychology has examined the relationship between mental imagery and hypnotisability. A study by M. L. Glisky, D. J. Tataryn, and J. F. Kihlstrom found that the relationship between the vividness of mental imagery and hypnotisability was inconsistent across two studies, while absorption showed a stronger relationship in the samples examined. A later scholarly review by Devin B. Terhune and David A. Oakley examines the broader relationships between hypnosis, imagination, hypnotic suggestion, and mental imagery.<ref name="Terhune">Devin B. Terhune and David A. The comparison is therefore best understood as a question about overlapping psychological processes, not as proof that Ignatius's exercises constitute hypnotism. The available sources establish the use of imaginative techniques in Ignatian spirituality and the relevance of mental imagery to the study of hypnosis; they do not establish that the Spiritual Exercises are a form of hypnosis or that Ignatius intended to induce hypnosis.
