Phillips played a key role in the development of American popular music, discovering musicians such as [[Elvis Presley]], (whose contract was sold to RCA Victor for $35,000 due to Phillips' financial woes), [[Carl Perkins]], [[Roy Orbison]], and [[Johnny Cash]], and recording and releasing their music on his label.
