Major General Sterling Price was in retreat following the Battle of Mine Creek just a few hours earlier, and late in the afternoon of October 25 two brigades of Pleasonton's cavalry division under the command of Brigadier General John S. McNeil caught up with him near a crossing on the Marmiton River. A two-hour skirmish followed, Price's sizable force determined to make a stand which lasted some two hours. Observing that the Confederates outnumbered him by a sizable margin, but unaware many of them were unarmed, McNeil refused to order an assault upon their positions.
Safely crossing the Marmiton River, Price continued his retreat with his men and wagons largely intact, with McNeil unable to mount an effective pursuit.
