Charles Hardin 'Buddy' Holly (1936-1959) was an early rock and roll pioneer. The lead singer of the group The Crickets, Holly is most famous for his songs Peggy Sue and That'll Be The Day.
On February 2, 1959, the plane on which Holly was flying, crashed outside Macon City, Iowa, killing Holly as well as fellow rock and roll singers Ritchie Vallens and The Big Bopper. Don McLean, a friend of both the Big Bopper and Holly, wrote the song American Pie to commemorate their death, referring to that day as "the day the music died."[1][2]
