A gamete is a haploid cell that exists in organisms that engage in sexual reproduction. Gametes are produced by a process of cell division known as meiosis, during which a diploid (2n) gametocyte cell halves its number of chromosomes during several divisions, forming haploid (n) cells.
During fertilization, two gametes fuse together to form a new diploid cell, known as a zygote. In animals, gametes are produced by the gonads.
