A Nocturne is a form of instrumental music developed in the 19th century and most commonly associated with the piano. The name means 'of the night' and is generally used to refer to a slow, dream-like piece.
The earliest pieces called Nocturnes were written by the pianist and composer John Field - Chopin was inspired by these to create perhaps the most famous examples in the 1830s and 1840s.
Other well known Nocturnes have been created by Edvard Grieg, Claude Debussy and Benjamin Britten.
