Hoffman was arrested for mutilating the United States flag (one of his many crimes), as the [[FBI]] had a 4,101 page file on him and his activities. Hoffman was involved in organizing political protests surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention which culminated in violence between protesters and police. On March 20, 1969, he was indicted by a grand jury on charges of conspiracy and crossing state lines to incite a riot. He was found guilty of the latter charge on February 18, 1970, and sentenced to five years in prison.
