A view of the Old District of Bern in 2007.
The Swiss Federal Palace (Bundeshaus) in Bern.

Bern is the de facto capital (bundesstadt) of Switzerland.[1] The city is located along a narrow loop of the Aar River.

Bern was the scene of a disputation in 1528 between Roman Catholics and Reformers that led to its acceptance and subsequent championship of Protestant doctrines.[2]
