Chuck Smith is the founder of the Calvary Chapel fellowship of churches, beginning with the original Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California in the late 1960s. Reaching out to hippies and ex-hippies during the Jesus Movement, Smith's original churches spread so that today over 1,000 churches have the name Calvary Chapel.

Apart from his pastoring, Smith is a prolific author of Christian works.
