A supercritical fluid forms at high pressures and high temperatures, when a substance no longer has a distinction between a liquid and a gas. For example, a supercritical fluid is compressible (like a liquid) but takes the shape of the container (like a gas). The point on the phase diagram where a supercritical fluid forms is called the critical point.
