Illustration of the martian tripods

The War of the Worlds is a novel by H.G. Wells that was first published in 1898. The novel deals with a possible invasion of Earth by fictional Martians, who in the story are technologically more advanced than the humans.

Radio broadcast and panic

In 1938, Orson Welles produced a radio dramatization that sounds remarkably like an authentic newscast, causing a panic in many parts of the United States when listeners mistook the story for an actual news broadcast.

Adaptations

The book has been reworked many times. There have been modernizations, sequels by other authors, alternate tellings (including one where Superman fights the Martians), several films, and even a musical.
