Survivor Series is a pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment. It is one of the big four pay-per-view events produced by WWE. It is the second oldest pay-per-view event, with WrestleMania being the oldest. It features elimination matches, where two teams, usually of around five, eliminate members from the opposing team. The event is also notable for the debuts of certain wrestlers. The Undertaker made his WWE debut at the 1990 Survivor Series, Ric Flair in 1991, The Rock (then known as Rocky Maivia) in 1996, Kurt Angle in 1999, and Sting in 2014. When Survivor Series first began, it occurred on Thanksgiving Night. However, it now occurs the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving.

Montreal Screwjob

The 1997 Survivor Series in Montreal is infamous for the Montreal Screwjob. At the time, the current WWE Champion, Bret Hart, was getting ready to leave WWE and go to WCW. However, Hart did not want to drop the title to Shawn Michaels in Hart's native Canada. Various outcomes were thrown around, including the match at Survivor Series ending in a no-contest, with Hart appearing on Raw the following night, forfeiting the title. One of the main concerns was the fear that Hart would take the title with him to WCW, as a few years prior, Madusa, who wrestled under the name Alundra Blayze, took the Women's Championship with her to WCW, and threw the belt in the trash on an episode of Nitro.

The match happened as planned at the event. As seen in the 1998 documentary Wrestling With Shadows, Hart was led to believe that when Michaels put him in the Sharpshooter, which happened to be Hart's signature move, he would reverse it on Michaels. DX and The Hart Foundation would come to the ring and the match would end in a no-contest. However, when Michaels put Hart in the Sharpshooter, Vince McMahon, at ringside, called for the bell to be rang, and Shawn Michaels was declared the new champion. When Hart realized what had happened, he spat in McMahon's face, tore up the ringside announce tables, and proceeded to spell out the letters WCW. The pay-per-view went off-air abruptly.

As a result of the Montreal Screwjob, Bret Hart did not appear on WWE programming for several years. In 2006, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. On January 4, 2010, Hart would return to Raw for the first time in 12 years. The Screwjob also saw the beginnings of the Mr. McMahon character, the persona Vince McMahon would start using during the Attitude Era.
