Somaliland is a region of Somalia corresponding with the former British colony of British Somaliland; in 1991 it declared its independence from the rest of the failed state of Somalia as the Republic of Somaliland, although this independence has not been recognized by any other nation. It borders Djibouti, Ethiopia and the rest of Somalia, and has a coastline on the Gulf of Aden. The Republic of Somaliland has an area of 68,000 square miles (137,600 km2) and a population of 3.5 million. The capital of Somaliland is Hargeisa; other major centers include Berbera.
