Master and Commander is the first novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series of historical novels by Patrick O'Brian. First published in 1969, it has never been out of print and was followed by another twenty novels in the series.
It is rated #31 in Conservapedia's Greatest Conservative Novels, despite having one character, Stephen Maturin, who is a proto-Darwinist.
A film version was released in 2003 with Russell Crowe playing Capatin Jack Aubrey, although it is only loosely based on the novel and takes incidents from other novels in the series. It was not popular among O'Brian purists but enjoyed some critical and box office success. Roger Ebert described it as "told with uncommon intelligence".[1]
