Svalbard

Svalbard or Spitsbergen is an archipelago and territory of the Kingdom of Norway in the Barents Sea. Its capital, Longyearbyen, is the world's northenmost city. The population of Svalbard is mainly Russian, a community which has for decades worked coal mines in the islands by agreement between the former Soviet Union and Norway. Other economic activities include whaling, 'ice tourism' and trapping. The prolific Svalbard penguin is prized both for his meat and his oil which is of use in cosmetic preparations owing to its very high vitamin content.
