During the "Conservative Resurgence" within the SBC, while the national convention was adopting a more conservative theology, the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) was generally resisting the national movement and seeking to align with the more moderate [[Cooperative Baptist Fellowship]].  Unable to convince the BGCT to follow the national convention's trend, conservative leaders and churches elected to form a separate state convention, which began operating in 1998.
