Unsolved Mysteries was a television program which ran on NBC from 1988-1997, then on CBS from 1997-1999. It revived for a brief time (mainly from repackaged segments of older episodes) on Lifetime Channel from 2001-2002, after which it has appeared as reruns on various cable networks. The movie streaming service Netflix produced six new episodes beginning in July 2020.

The show featured a documentary format of unsolved criminal cases, missing persons, mysterious phenomena, and alternative history/conspiracy theories. Each segment would fall generally into one of four categories:

  • Wanted - missing persons, unsolved crimes, criminals being sought (either the identity is unknown, or is known but the whereabouts are unknown)
  • Lost Loves - a person seeking another person who had importance in his/her life (such as an adopted person seeking birth parents, or a person helped by a "Good Samaritan" seeking that person)
  • Alternative History - alternative theories about historical events (such as a Texas resident claiming that Billy the Kid was not really killed by Pat Garrett, but that he was in fact that person)
  • Paranormal - stories such as miracles, UFO sightings, and other unexplained phenomena

In the Wanted and Lost Loves categories, later episodes would feature the capture of a criminal, or the person being sought having been found and reunited.

The producers continue to maintain a website and accept leads on Wanted or Lost Loves segments (and update them as applicable).
