Lech Walesa (born 1943) was a leader in Solidarity, an anti-Communist group in Poland, then a Soviet satellite nation, in the 1980s. In 1980, he led a strike at the Gdansk shipyard, which led to strikes throughout Poland for workers' rights. He was awarded the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize for his actions. [1] In 1990, he was elected president of Poland, and served until 1995.
