John Francis "Jack" Reed, born November 12, 1949 (age 76), is a Democrat United States Senator from Rhode Island. He was elected in 1996, and has served in the Senate since then. Previously, Reed was a three term member of U.S. House of Representatives and represented Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District. In the Senate, Reed is a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, which controls congressional funding initiatives, and also a senior member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.[1]
Reed is a very liberal Senator and has a consistent liberal voting record on the issues of abortion, tax increases, and education.[2] After President George W. Bush's September 2007 address to the nation regarding the Iraq War, Reed delivered the Democratic Response on national television and called for an immediate end to the war.[3]
