Edmund Crowsely

Edmund Crowsely (1604-1643) is a largely forgotten poet and dramatist from Whitby in England. Due to his untimely death at a young age, very little of his work survived and little is known about him. His comedic play, "Merrie John Tickle", is perhaps his only known complete work and is performed annually at the Spa Theatre in Whitby to coincide with the Regatta. He was survived by his brother, William.

He is probably best remembered for the following lines:

The single thought is licens'd in the mind,

And of this confidence is passion made.
