Disputation was formal scholastic debate in medieval universities in Europe. The subject would be agreed upon beforehand, usually on a subject of theology, and the rules of debate were based on formal procedures. Typically it would be part of a public ceremony, such as an ecclesiastical celebration.

The most famous disputation was "The Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," commonly known today as [[The 95 Theses]].
