Sumer was the land of Sumerians in southern [[Mesopotamia]], in present-day [[Iraq]]. Ur was the most important city. The Sumerians greatest invention was [[cuneiform]] writing.  They also invented the first codes of law, the first [[city-states]], the seed plow, the sailboat, and the potter’s wheel.
