A [[Republican]], he had been in the Senate since 2002, when he defeated [[Democrat]] [[Max Cleland]] to gain the seat in a controversial race, after which Chambliss was accused of painting his veteran opponent as unpatriotic. His colleague was [[Johnny Isakson]], a fellow Republican, and a former colleague when both were in the [[House of Representatives]], as well.

Chambliss was successful in holding off his liberal and democratic Jim Martin, keeping the filibuster in the balance. Saxby Chambliss said that he is pro-life and does not support [[homosexual marriage]], but supports tax increases, even though earlier in his career he received a reward from [[Grover Norquist]] for taking the opposite position.
