Roman Numerals are the symbols used by the Roman Empire to show numeric values.

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

Symbols are put in order from greatest to least. A lesser symbol occurring before a greater symbol is subtraction. They can still be found today when showing dates for movies or television shows.

  • Example: MCMLXXXIII = 1983
  • Example: MCC = 1200
